A New Family TraditionThese envelopes appeared on our tree just a few days before Christmas. It was really confusing for Sassy and Rocket. Once they opened them on Christmas morning they realized there was money in there to spend for Jesus.
I had printed some fake bills and on the back of them wrote...
"go to www.samaritianspurse.org and spend this money."
They had such a great time shopping online for others.
Sassy bought mosquito nets, blankets, baby chicks, honeybees, hot meals and emergency shelters with her money.
Rocket spent his money on an airline ticket to save a life, giving an orphan a month of loving care, transforming the life of a disabled person, mosquito nets and feeding a baby for a week.
We really want to teach our kids to think of others at Christmas time. Christmas is such a greedy time of the year. It is something we all struggle with. This year we are going to have the kids give a 10th of every penny they get and next Christmas they can spend their own money for Samaritan's purse.

I love this lesson for your children and the gift of love you are teaching them. I wanted to do the same thing this year, that is to give to Samaritan's Purse as your letters from them come here. I shared these pictures with Tracy.

What a GREAT idea!! This is something I am going to look into.
When we lived in the states, we would get the name of a needy family from the school. The school counselor would ask the family for a list of gifts for each family member and sizes of clothes. Then we would go shopping. Everything was kept anonymous. The girls really enjoyed shopping for the family.
