As a family we try to not watch much TV. Our first year back after Bangladesh (where we didn't have TV) we decided to get Dish TV. I found myself addicted to it! Seriously, I would record shows and the spend hours watching them. I found myself getting irritated at the kids because they wouldn't let me "watch" my shows. One day Shannon went to his Sunday school and on our way home he said they discussed getting rid of TV. He said, "How about we do that?" The Lord had already been dealing with me on this....so I agreed. We called our satillite company whom we had been customers of for only five months. Of course they tried every trick in the book to keep us. The lady on the phone couldn't believe we wanted to cancel and pay the penalty fee(even though it was cheaper this way than paying for two more years). She actually got quite ugly with my Man over it! Ok, this isn't the trail I was wanting to head down for this post, but hey...it's my blog, right? In the end, we got rid of Dish. We lived in the country and couldn't get much on the antenna. It was really hard in the beginning! I felt like I was having withdrawals from TV. After about a month, I finally felt that I didn't have that tug towards the TV. Quality of life for us began to get better. We spent a lot of time playing outside with the kids. More fishing, baseball (which I miss, cricket just isn't the same!) just hanging out with family.
So now that we are here, we have tv and we have cable. Don't be fooled, it is nothing like Dish or Direct TV. We have shows like Different Strokes, Tom and Jerry, Richie Rich, etc.... We have all the Bollywood movies you could possibly want in a lifetime! We try to only watch tv once or twice a week. I have REALLY enjoyed American Idol on Thursday and Friday nights!
Back in the old days before there was tv, families use to gather around the radio and listen to the shows. Our family has found an alternative to tv as we gather around and listen to the radio. It is called His Kids. Net. We love it. They have several different story lines to choose from and they are all Christian based. They teach really neat lessons that align with scripture.
Try it tonight, turn off the tube and make pallets on the floor and lay around listening to great stories!
